The e12 is a mid range 4 door saloon and successor to the "Neue Klasse" BMW 1500-2000. The newly named 5 Series rolled out of the new Dingolfing plant in 1972. Today the e12 has a keen following around the World.

Distinguishing features: bonnet wraps over wing, is hinged at the front and has a long plastic grille infront of the windscreen. Chrome bumpers with indicator set into the corner pieces.

Major developments were implemented in the second generation of the 5 Series, better aerodynamics, improved safety and greater comfort. The range of options was also increased with an emphasys on greater fuel economy with 5 speed gearboxes becoming standard and 4 speed automatic transmission.

Distinguishing features: wing wraps to bonnet, bonnet is hinged at the windscreen and has two short plastic grille infront of the windscreen. The indicators are set into the bottom valance. No grille in rear pillar.

The 3rd generation 5 series was redesigned from the ground up. The range incorporated 4,6 and 8 cylinder engines as well as a new 2.5 litre turbo-diesel with digital injection, charge air cooling and catayltic converter.

Distinguishing features: front grilles are housed in indepentent panel which runs under the headlamps. Indicator alongside headlamp. No grille in bonnet.

The family of 5 Series continuted into its 4th generation with the e39. Larger all-round it used lightweight construction techniques but increased chassis rigidity.

Distinguishing features: bonnet wraps to bumper between headlamps and incorporates kidney grilles. Headlamps and indicator are one unit behind plastic fascia.
