Following the 1972 5 Series launch, BMW continued their model expansion and the 3 Series took over from the highly successful '02. This range of 2 door sport saloons was soon available with a small 6 cylinder engine.

Distinguishing features: bonnet wraps onto top of wing, bonnet hinged at front, chrome bumpers and indicators next to the headlamps

The second generation 3 Series continued to build on the success of its predecessor with improved technology, better styling and range of body options. In 1988 the 324td was the first car to have electronic diesel injection and newly developed 4 cylinder engines were introduced.

Distinguishing features: wing wraps to bonnet, bonnet hinged at front, metal bumpers upto 9/87 plastic thereafter, oblong indicator in bumper.
e36 1990-1998

The e36 again built on the range of body options offered by its predecessor and offered increased passenger and luggage space. Again, building another class leader, BMW introduced 5 speed automatic transmission and split temperature controls for driver and passenger.

Distinguishing features: wing wraps to bonnet, bonnet hinged at windscreen, headlamps behind oblong glass cover with indicator next to them.

Once again, building on its predecessor, the 4th generation 3 Series offered larger cabin and luggage space, improved handling and stability technology and a modern range of powerful 4 and 6 cylinder engines.

Distinguishing features: wing wraps to bonnet, bonnet hinged at windscreen with central kidney grilles included in bonnet, plastic headlamp covers have scalloped bottom with indicator next to them.
